Irish Defence Forces Veterans Day 2026 brought together serving personnel, veterans, families, and the wider public to honour the men and women who have served Ireland with courage, dignity, and unwavering commitment. Held at McKee Barracks on 25 September, the ceremony highlighted the legacy of service that continues to shape Ireland’s national identity.

A Day of National Recognition

Veterans Day is a moment to pause and reflect on the contributions of those who stood ready in times of crisis, represented Ireland abroad, and safeguarded peace at home. From UN peacekeeping missions to domestic operations, Irish veterans have earned global respect for their professionalism and humanity.

This year’s commemoration featured:

  • A formal wreath‑laying ceremony
  • A parade of veterans’ organisations
  • Defence Forces ceremonial participation, including military music and colour parties
  • Speeches acknowledging the role of veterans in Irish society
  • Family and community engagement celebrating the people behind the uniform

Address by the Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD

Representing the Government, Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, paid tribute to the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Defence Forces veterans. He emphasised that Veterans Day is an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the contributions made by personnel both at home and in conflict zones around the world.

He highlighted Ireland’s proud peacekeeping tradition, noting that Defence Forces personnel have completed over 76,000 individual tours of duty since 1958, serving in more than 20 United Nations missions. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting veterans and ensuring their service is recognised and valued.

Minister Byrne reviewed the parade of veterans’ organisations and participated in the wreath‑laying ceremony, expressing his personal gratitude to all who served.

“Veterans’ Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on the extraordinary courage, contributions, and indeed sacrifices, that our Defence Forces personnel have made, both at home and in conflict zones around the world… It is a record of which we are justifiably very proud, and which we are determined to continue.”

Statement from the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy

The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, paid tribute to the unique nature of military service and the enduring values upheld by veterans. He emphasised that Veterans Day honours every individual who has worn the uniform of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

Lieutenant General Mulcahy highlighted the camaraderie, strength, and example veterans continue to bring to the Defence Forces family.

“Veterans’ Day honours the service of all those who wore the uniform of Óglaigh na hÉireann. Military service is unique and our Veterans champion the Defence Forces Values, developed through that service. I would like to thank our Veterans for their service, the camaraderie and strength they bring to the Defence Forces family.”

Irish veterans’ organisations continue to play a vital role in supporting former service members, preserving military heritage, and strengthening the bond between the Defence Forces and the wider public.
